A driver accused of causing the death of a woman in a crash near Okehampton has walked free from court after the prosecution accepted she was not to blame. Rebecca Mann, 31, of Haldon Wood Farm, Sourton, was due to stand trial at Exeter Crown Court charged with causing the death by careless driving of activities instructor Marin Evans, 25, on the A on August 13, Experts concluded that Mann could not have known that there was a fault with the rear offside tyre of her Ford Focus at the time of the collision with the Peugeot at Thornden Cross.
Air was leaking from a valve stem so the tyre appeared to be normal to the naked eye and Mann would not have been aware it was under inflated. Ms Evans was a passenger in a car travelling in the opposite direction as Mann lost control negotiating a sharp left hand bend.
Judge Timothy Rose returned a verdict of not guilty and the defendant was allowed to leave the dock. By Paul Greaves.
